Ilha Grande

23 maart 2016 - Angra dos Reis, Brazilië

My goodness,

So much has happened in these last four days. Also, I can't believe that I've soon been here for a week!
Nights out in Rio are expensive, (for a Swansea girl anyways) but so much fun! It helped that I didn't spend a single cent on drinks though. The free caiprinhias from the hostel plus a few drinks the hostel guys bought for us (that literally just tasted like squash) did the job quite well. Although getting up early to go to the sugarloaf mountain was not the easiest, haha! But then again, the view from up there is absolutely brilliant!! So that made up for a lot. Plus lying on the sand of copacabana beach afterwards really didn't hurt either!

The day after we left the hostel early to go to this island approximately two hours South of Rio de Janeiro: Ilha Grande; and it is nothing short of a paradise! They have everything you might need or want on a sun holiday. White beaches, surfing, diving, snorkeling, a nightlife, and obviously beautiful surroundings. Yesterday we hiked through the rainforest for 2.5 hours to get to Lopes Mendes beach, where we then stayed for a few hours before heading back. We weren't home for long, because we had found a group of locals on the island that practiced capoeira the day before, and they told us it was okay for us to join them the day after. The things those people can do is mental! Capoeira is basically half dancing, half fighting, and it is so impressive to watch! (but really, really difficult to actually do)

This morning Simone and I took this boat tour around the north side of the island which absolutely took my breath away. We were swimming amongst the fish, and it happened a few times that a massive school of brightly coloured fish surrounded me completely. I also got to see crabs the size of my face and a starfish larger than any I've ever seen before. Yes, my arms are a little sunburned now, but it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make!

We only have one full day left on this island before we travel on to Paraty. We were hoping to go surfing at Adventurios beach, but now it looks like it is going to be very difficult and very, very expensive to go, so we might have to think of something else. Personally I'd love to go back to Lopes Mendes and surf there (I just really, really wanna go surfing here!) but I don't know if I wanna go hiking for another 2.5 hours to get to the same beach we were at yesterday, haha! Oh well, we will see. For now I'll just relax in a hammock and enjoy the heat!
